Aero-Vertical Farms Case Study: Improving Root Health with In-Tank UVC Disinfection

Ahmedabad, Gujarat • 6 min read • Published: 2026

An Ahmedabad-based commercial aeroponic farm was experiencing poor plant growth, root damage, and falling yields. The main cause was identified as the build-up and circulation of waterborne pathogens within the farm’s closed-loop nutrient system.

The farm recirculated nutrient water through its vertical growing rows for approximately seven to ten days before replacing it. While this process helped reduce water consumption, it also allowed microorganisms such as Pythium and Phytophthora to spread throughout the system.

01 The Challenge

The facility used a multi-tier aeroponic system with dedicated nutrient tanks serving different growing rows. Submersible pumps moved nutrient-rich water from each tank to suspended plant roots, where it was delivered as a fine mist before returning to the tank.

Over time, the farm observed:

Brown and slimy plant roots
Root-zone fungal growth
Reduced nutrient absorption
Plant wilting and slow development
Uneven crop growth across rows
Lower yields and longer crop cycles

The Recirculation Risk: Because the system operated on a closed loop, a single contaminated tank continued circulating pathogens endlessly across all connected vertical growing rows.

02 The UVC Solution

To improve water hygiene without introducing chemical disinfectants into the sensitive nutrient solution, industrial immersion UVC units were installed directly inside the individual nutrient tanks.

Continuous Inactivation: As water continuously circulated through each tank, it repeatedly traversed the UVC irradiation zone. The high-energy 254nm ultraviolet light damaged the genetic structure (DNA/RNA) of bacteria, fungi, and oomycetes, halting their ability to replicate and colonize root surfaces.

Zero Infrastructure Rework: The retrofit solution was engineered to match the farm’s existing reservoir tanks, submersible pumps, and irrigation lines—bypassing any requirement for complex pipe re-routing or capital redesigns.

03 Why UVC Was Selected

UVC provided several critical technical and operational advantages over chemical treatment methods in the aeroponic vertical farming environment:

  • No Chemical Residuals: Completely free from chlorine, ozone, peroxides, or chemical residues that shock root systems.
  • Nutrient Solution Stability: Causes no breakdown or significant change to nutrient chemistry when correctly designed.
  • Continuous In-Tank Protection: Provides constant microbial suppression during routine recirculation cycles.
  • Easy Tank Integration: Directly immersed into existing nutrient tanks with zero downtime.
  • Extended Water Lifecycle: Supports longer and more predictable water-use cycles between tank flushes.
  • Cross-Contamination Barrier: Inhibits pathogen transmission from spreading between vertical growing tiers.

*Note: UVC treatment operated in synergy with standard facility hygiene, mechanical filtration, and periodic water testing protocols.

04 Reported Results

Following the integration of the immersion UVC system, the facility reported noticeable improvements in root morphology and crop yields:

Visible Root Condition

Roots that were previously discolored and slimy became visibly cleaner, vibrant, and white within the subsequent water-change cycle.

Enhanced Nutrient Uptake

Free of biological biofilm stress, crops absorbed oxygen and mineral nutrients more effectively, eliminating wilting and shortening crop cycles.

Canopy Consistency

Growth rates across vertical tiers normalized, allowing the farm to utilize its vertical volume with uniform canopy density.

Stable 7–10 Day Water Cycles

Maintained full 7-to-10 day nutrient water cycles safely, preserving water conservation targets without risking catastrophic pathogen outbreaks.

05 Key Benefits for Commercial Vertical Farms

In-tank UVC disinfection provides hydroponic and aeroponic farm operators with tangible operating advantages:

Protect root health & structure
Drastically reduce waterborne pathogens
Drive uniform, repeatable crop growth
Prevent unplanned tank flushes
Maximize water-use efficiency
Protect commercial yield metrics
Eliminate chemical disinfection risks
Simple drop-in retrofit setup

Conclusion

This case study demonstrates how targeted UVC technology supports resilient root health and dependable crop production in recirculating aeroponic systems. By deploying immersion UVC units directly inside its nutrient tanks, the Ahmedabad facility solved a critical biological threat while maintaining its water-saving operating model.

For vertical farms, in-tank UVC offers a practical and chemical-free method of improving water hygiene, supporting root health, and protecting production performance.
